Global Tensions Escalate After US-Israel Strikes on Iran; World Leaders Respond

Tehran, Iran – March 1, 2026

The Middle East is witnessing an unprecedented escalation as the United States and Israel launch large-scale military strikes on Iran, resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to Iranian state media and international reports.

The attacks, described by Washington and Tel Aviv as a preventive measure against perceived nuclear and missile threats, have triggered retaliatory actions by Tehran and prompted a range of responses from countries across the globe.

Strikes and Immediate Fallout

Iran confirmed that multiple missiles and drones were launched in retaliation against U.S. bases and neighboring Gulf countries. Tehran is reorganizing its leadership following Khamenei’s death, while military operations continue amid escalating regional tension. Casualties have been reported among Iranian civilians, U.S. service members, and Israeli forces.

In response, Israel declared a state of emergency and mobilized troops in anticipation of potential retaliation, warning that any proxy involvement, including from Hezbollah, would be met with decisive action.

International Reactions

United States

Washington has defended the strikes as necessary for national security. President Trump stated that operations are “moving along rapidly” and signaled openness to diplomatic engagement with Iran’s new leadership. Domestic reactions are mixed, with protests both supporting and condemning the military action.

European Union and Western Allies

The UK, France, Germany, and other European nations have refrained from participating in the attacks. EU officials have called for restraint, civilian protection, and renewed diplomatic efforts, emphasizing the need to avoid a wider conflict.

Russia and China

Both Russia and China strongly condemned the strikes. Moscow called the operation “unprovoked aggression,” while Beijing urged an immediate ceasefire and dialogue, issuing advisories for Chinese citizens in the region.

Gulf States

Countries including Qatar, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia condemned Iran’s retaliatory attacks on their territories and emphasized the protection of sovereignty, while also urging de-escalation.

Other Nations

Brazil and Pakistan condemned the strikes and called for de-escalation.

India and Indonesia urged diplomatic resolution and dialogue.

Lebanon has avoided direct involvement, though Hezbollah voiced solidarity with Iran.

The African Union warned of broader regional consequences if the conflict expands.

Proxy Groups

Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas have condemned the U.S.-Israeli strikes, aligning themselves with Iran’s position.

Global Implications

The conflict is affecting energy security, with oil prices surging amid threats to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts warn that a wider regional war could destabilize the Middle East further, potentially impacting global markets and security.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for urgent diplomatic intervention, emphasizing the protection of civilians and the prevention of further escalation.

Summary of Global Stance

Supportive of US-Israel action: United States, Israel

Cautious / Diplomatic: EU countries, India, African Union

Critical / Condemnatory: Russia, China, Brazil, Pakistan, select Gulf States

As military operations continue and world leaders issue warnings and calls for diplomacy, the coming days are likely to shape the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East for years to come.
